Richard Osgood Foley was the son of Sean and Maggie Foley. His family was of Irish and Scandinavian descent.
He became close friends with Virgil Hawkins, who was also one of the brighter students at Dakota Union High School. The two bonded over their common love of comic books, rap, and basketball, but he knew that his father, who was a racist, would not approve of a black friend, so he never invited Virgil over. They continue going to school together, trying to avoid getting beat up by bullies, like Francis "F-Stop" Stone. Though someone, named Wade, keeps protecting them, Richie doesn't trust the thug, as he belongs to a gang. However, he fears Virgil might be interested in joining them.
