Bio:
Daughter of James Gordon and Barbara Eileen, Barbara Gordon idolized superheroes for a long while. From the first heroic war hero, Captain America, to the forgotten Justice Society, Barbara loved them all. But the one hero she was infatuated with was her hometown's hero, the Batman. Her best friend, Pamela Isley would spend hours with her, drawing super-hero costumes and heroic identities for themselves, when they were very young. Though she wanted to be a super-hero, being a police detective, like her father, was the closest thing she believed she can achieve. Sadly, her father tried to steer her away from that to pursue a career in the Olympics because he felt his lifework was too dangerous for her.
Pamela had a huge record; sent to a youth detention center repeatedly for delinquent acts during her environmental protests. The older high-schooler sometimes convinces Barbara to help her with her "protests," which were actually scouting missions on polluting companies for her hired mercenary, the corporate saboteur Temblor. During a battle with Temblor in the Chlorogene lab, Barbara sees The Batman in action; after this, the seed to become Batgirl (or “Batwoman”, as she demands to be called until Commissioner James Gordon calls her by the name Batgirl) is planted. The battle also causes Pamela to become the teen villainess Poison Ivy after an experimental plant mutagen fell upon her.
The next day, Pamela arrived at Barbara's doorstep as a mutant plant woman, Poison Ivy, offering her to join her. Barbara hoped to help Pamela, but feared she will be locked away. So, she created her Batgirl/Batwoman costume and then tried to help Batman take Poison Ivy down. But later on, the plant girl kidnapped her father and trapped Batman under her mind control. During the battle she beat Batman in hand-to-hand combat by kicking him into a pond, which freed him of Ivy's control. After she defeated Ivy and saved her father, The Batman decides not to tell Gordon that his daughter is Batgirl.
Since then, she aided The Dark Knight with numerous cases, proving herself as a trusted ally. Batman himself, despite never asking to have a partner, becomes fond of Barbara working with him - though he would not admit it. She finally became an official sidekick, during the time Robin (Dick Greyson) appeared, and had her costume and gadgets upgraded by Bruce Wayne, who she was trusted to known as the Batman.
But things went sour, and Batman's view on sidekicks dwindled. When Dick Greyson went to college, giving him little time to be Robin, a boy named Jason Todd took the role as Robin...someone Barbara thought to be as a jerk. But a horrible news fell to her; Jason Todd was brutally beaten to death by the Joker. Fearing for the safety of his other sidekicks, he took away Barbara's suit and gadgets, demanding her to give up crime-fighting.
Though her equipment was gone, Barbara refused to give up. She was determined to stay a superhero, even if she had to use her old, non-bullet-proof costume, and very limited gadgets she created. Later, she went on a vacation with her family to Metropolis, hoping to get away from the crime and danger...well, her parents hoped. But they found that Metropolis was just as bad as Gotham, when a criminal known as the Toyman robbed a bank. Barbara went after him, as Batgirl, but was overwhelmed by Toyman's toy-based robots. But she got an unexpected help from a flying blonde superhero, Kara (not yet known as Supergirl). After they defeated Toyman, the two became fast friends. Kara offered Barbara to join her own superhero league (not yet known as the Justice League), who happily accepted. With their resources, Barbara was able to upgrade her suit and gadgets almost effectively as Batman's upgrades, and now had a team she can call for backup.
